History of Can-Jer Industrial Lubricant Co

In the 1940’s, iron ore was excavated and mined north of Atikokan, Ontario by Steep rock Iron Mines and Caland Ore Company.  Massive amounts of earth and ore were moved until the mine closures in 1979 and 1980; and we were there as a vital lubricant, equipment and service partner.  The equipment challenges of drilling, excavating and then hauling of 60 million tons of high grade ore from the pits at the bottom of Steep Rock Lake demanded lubrication experience that enabled the equipment to operate efficiently 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, in punishing and varied Ontario winter and summer  environments.

Dan Hoolihan was the Can-Jer salesman who flew his 1947 Stinson float plane throughout Ontario calling on other mines and expanding Can-Jer’s foot print and customer base.  When the floats were off at the end of summer, the wheels were put back on the “tail dragger” airplane, and Dan would frequently land directly in the haul roads of the coal, copper, and iron ore mines that he was visiting.

Through it all, our company developed business with and provided Whitmore Lubricants and Lincoln Lubrication equipment to mines that included Iron Ore Company of Canada in Labrador, INCO in Manitoba, Falconridge in Ontario, Luscar and Saskatchewan Power in Saskatchewan, Manalta coal in Alberta and Kaiser Coal  Limited in British Columbia.

To service our customers, Can-Jer first established a warehouse and office in Fort Francis, Ontario and then added an additional facility and personnel in Estevan, Saskatchewan.
